Good at
- Compresses photos tightly, and the loss is hard to notice
- Opens literally everywhere, including old devices and printers
- Fast to encode and open, easy on the device
Awkward about
- Lossy: every re-save degrades the image a little more
- No transparency — it turns white or black
- Visible halos appear around text and sharp edges
Use it when
- Photos that will not be edited further
- When the file has to open for absolutely anyone
PNG
Good at
- Lossless: pixels stay exactly as they were
- Full transparency, including soft semi-transparent edges
- Opens everywhere without exception — the format is nearly thirty years old
Awkward about
- Photos weigh several times more than in JPEG or WebP
- No animation: APNG support is far from universal
Use it when
- Screenshots, diagrams, logos — anything with sharp edges and text
- When you need transparency

Common questions
- Does the file get uploaded to a server?
- No. JPEG → PNG runs right in your browser and the file never leaves your device. It only goes to a server if the browser cannot cope — and then we delete it within a couple of hours.
- Will transparency survive?
- Yes, PNG supports transparency, so semi-transparent edges stay as they were.
- Can I get the original quality back afterwards?
- Nothing is lost, but nothing is gained either. PNG stores exactly what JPEG hands over, including the gaps JPEG left behind when it compressed. No tool can bring those back, and the file grows several times over. This conversion makes sense for editing, not for quality.
- How many files, and how large?
